Core lesson

A CBC, or complete blood count, looks at blood cells: white blood cells, red blood cells, hemoglobin, hematocrit, and platelets. WBC relates to immune response and infection clues. Hemoglobin and hematocrit relate to oxygen-carrying red cells. Platelets relate to clotting.

A CMP, or comprehensive metabolic panel, includes electrolytes, kidney markers, liver markers, glucose, proteins, and more. It helps show hydration, kidney function, liver stress, glucose status, and chemical balance.

Electrolytes such as sodium, potassium, chloride, bicarbonate, calcium, and magnesium affect nerves, muscles, heart rhythm, and fluid balance. Potassium is especially important in cardiac safety because abnormal levels can affect rhythm.

Kidney function is often described with creatinine, BUN, and eGFR. Liver injury or stress may be discussed with AST, ALT, alkaline phosphatase, bilirubin, and albumin.

ALT and AST
Liver-associated enzymes that may rise with liver cell injury or stress.
CRP
C-reactive protein, an inflammation marker.

How to think through questions

  • Ask what system the lab belongs to: blood cells, electrolytes, kidney, liver, inflammation, glucose, or clotting.
  • Look for dangerous combinations: high potassium plus ECG changes, low platelets plus bleeding, low hemoglobin plus weakness or shortness of breath, abnormal kidney function plus medication dosing.
  • Trends matter. A lab moving quickly in the wrong direction can be more concerning than a stable mild abnormality.

Common mistakes

  • Treating a single lab number like a diagnosis. Labs need clinical context.
  • Forgetting that dehydration can affect BUN, creatinine, sodium, and hematocrit patterns.
  • Ignoring medication effects on labs, such as diuretics and potassium changes.
  • Mixing up hemoglobin and hematocrit. They are related but not identical.
