Abbreviations are shortcuts. CBC, CMP, EKG, DVT, PE, CHF, COPD, OSA, ABG, and SpO2 are common examples. Students should learn what they stand for and what category they belong to.
Some abbreviations describe tests. CBC is a blood cell test. CMP is a blood chemistry panel. EKG or ECG records electrical activity of the heart. ABG measures oxygen, carbon dioxide, pH, and related values in arterial blood.
Other abbreviations describe conditions. DVT is a deep vein thrombosis. PE is a pulmonary embolism. CHF is congestive heart failure. COPD is chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. OSA is obstructive sleep apnea.
The safest habit is to read the surrounding words. For example, “PE†could mean pulmonary embolism in an emergency note, but physical exam in another context. Context keeps students from memorizing the wrong meaning.
