Plain-English introduction
CD markers are labels found on the surface of cells, especially immune cells. CD stands for cluster of differentiation. These markers help laboratories identify cell types and stages.
Students may see CD4, CD8, CD19, CD20, CD3, CD56, and many others. The number alone is not “good” or “bad” without knowing the patient, the test, and the reason it was ordered.

T cells often express CD3. Helper T cells commonly express CD4. Cytotoxic T cells commonly express CD8. B cells often express CD19 or CD20. Natural killer cells may be associated with CD16 and CD56 patterns. These are simplified learning anchors, not the full complexity.
Flow cytometry is a lab method that uses markers to count or characterize cells. It can help evaluate immune status, leukemia/lymphoma, infection risk, treatment response, or immune disorders.
Interpretation depends on absolute counts, percentages, ratios, symptoms, medications, infections, and lab reference ranges. A low or high percentage may not mean the same thing as a low or high absolute count.
