Plain-English introduction
Labs are clues from blood, urine, stool, swabs, or other specimens. They help confirm, rule out, or monitor problems. But a lab result is not the patient by itself. Context, symptoms, medications, hydration, and timing matter.
Students often memorize normal ranges first, but understanding what the test measures is more useful. Ranges also vary by lab, age, and situation.

A CBC looks at blood cells: white blood cells, red blood cells, hemoglobin, hematocrit, and platelets. White cells can relate to infection, inflammation, immune conditions, or bone marrow issues. Hemoglobin and hematocrit relate to oxygen-carrying capacity and blood volume clues. Platelets help with clotting.
A CMP or chemistry panel often includes electrolytes, kidney markers, liver markers, glucose, proteins, and sometimes calcium. Sodium, potassium, chloride, bicarbonate, BUN, creatinine, AST, ALT, and bilirubin are common terms.
Specimen quality matters. A contaminated sample can mislead care. Cultures try to grow organisms to identify infection and guide treatment. Timing matters for some tests, and correct labeling is a major safety issue.
