Plain-English introduction

Imaging helps clinicians see inside the body. Different tools answer different questions. An X-ray may show bones and chest patterns. CT can provide detailed cross-sectional images quickly. MRI is strong for many soft-tissue and neurological questions. Ultrasound uses sound waves and is useful for many bedside and pregnancy-related evaluations.

Imaging does not replace assessment. A scan is chosen based on the question being asked, the urgency, the patient’s condition, safety concerns, and availability.

X-rays use radiation and are commonly used for chest imaging and bone injury. CT also uses radiation but creates cross-sectional images and can be very useful in trauma, stroke evaluation, abdominal pain, and many urgent settings. MRI uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves, so metal screening is critical.

Ultrasound does not use ionizing radiation. It can evaluate gallbladder, kidneys, pregnancy, blood flow in some studies, fluid, and guidance for procedures. Image quality can depend on body habitus, gas, operator skill, and the clinical question.

Contrast material can make vessels, organs, or tissues easier to see. Contrast safety includes allergy history, kidney function, pregnancy considerations, IV access, and screening questions. A radiologist is a physician trained to interpret imaging studies.

How to think through questions

  1. Ask what clinical question the image should answer.
  2. Know the imaging type and safety screening needs.
  3. Check contrast questions when contrast is ordered.
  4. Remember that imaging results must be matched to symptoms and exam findings.
