Genetics explains how biological instructions are stored and passed on. DNA contains instructions. Genes are sections of DNA. Chromosomes package DNA. Variants are differences in DNA sequence, and not every variant causes disease.

Dominant inheritance means one changed copy of a gene may be enough to influence a trait or condition. Recessive inheritance often means two changed copies are needed. X-linked inheritance involves genes on the X chromosome and can show different patterns in males and females.

A mutation or pathogenic variant may increase disease risk or cause a condition, but results can also be uncertain. A variant of uncertain significance means scientists do not yet know whether the change is harmful.

Genetic counseling helps people understand results, risks, limitations, family implications, and choices. Students should avoid treating consumer genetic results as complete medical answers.
