Somatic gene editing targets body cells that are not passed to future children. Germline editing affects sperm, eggs, embryos, or cells that can pass changes to future generations. Germline editing raises much larger ethical concerns because future people cannot consent.
Safety concerns include off-target effects, unintended consequences, immune reactions, delivery challenges, unknown long-term effects, and unequal access. Medical benefit must be tested through responsible research, regulation, and ethics review.
