Overview: Joints • Muscles • Autoimmune • Pain Terms. Learn rheumatology and musculoskeletal vocabulary including arthritis, tendonitis, bursitis, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, costochondritis, and inflammation terms.

What this lesson teaches

Musculoskeletal terms describe bones, joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, and connective tissue. Rheumatology adds immune and inflammatory diseases that affect those structures and sometimes the whole body.

This lesson helps students organize pain and inflammation vocabulary.

  • Separate muscle, bone, joint, tendon, and ligament terms.
  • Understand inflammation words such as arthritis, bursitis, and tendonitis.
  • Recognize autoimmune rheumatology terms such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus.
  • Learn costochondritis and chest-wall pain vocabulary.

Core lesson

A musculoskeletal complaint should be described by location, onset, injury, swelling, warmth, movement limits, weakness, numbness, and function. Joint pain after trauma is different from symmetrical morning stiffness in many joints.

Arthritis means joint inflammation. Osteoarthritis is often related to wear-and-tear cartilage changes. Rheumatoid arthritis is autoimmune and often affects joints in a symmetrical inflammatory pattern. Lupus is an autoimmune disease that can affect joints, skin, kidneys, blood, and other systems.

Tendons connect muscle to bone. Ligaments connect bone to bone. Bursae are small fluid-filled cushions that reduce friction. Inflammation of these structures creates words like tendonitis and bursitis.

Costochondritis is inflammation of the cartilage where ribs connect to the breastbone. It can cause chest wall pain and may be tender to touch, but chest pain should always be evaluated carefully in real life because heart and lung causes can be serious.

Key terms to know

Arthritis
Joint inflammation causing pain, stiffness, swelling, or decreased movement.
Osteoarthritis
A common arthritis type involving cartilage wear and joint changes.
Rheumatoid arthritis
An autoimmune inflammatory arthritis that often affects joints symmetrically.
Lupus
An autoimmune disease that can affect joints, skin, kidneys, blood, and other organs.
Tendon
Tissue connecting muscle to bone.
Ligament
Tissue connecting bone to bone.
Tendonitis
Inflammation or irritation of a tendon.
Bursitis
Inflammation of a bursa, a small cushioning sac near joints.
Costochondritis
Inflammation of rib cartilage near the sternum, causing chest wall pain.
Myalgia
Muscle pain.
Arthralgia
Joint pain without necessarily proving inflammation.
Synovitis
Inflammation of the synovial lining of a joint.

How to think through questions

  • For pain questions, identify the structure: bone, joint, muscle, tendon, ligament, nerve, or skin.
  • Inflammatory clues include warmth, swelling, redness, prolonged morning stiffness, and systemic symptoms.
  • Mechanical clues include pain with use, injury history, limited range of motion, and improvement with rest.

Common mistakes

  • Calling all joint pain arthritis. Arthralgia means joint pain; arthritis implies inflammation.
  • Ignoring chest pain because it might be costochondritis. Real chest pain needs careful evaluation.
  • Confusing tendons and ligaments.
  • Thinking autoimmune diseases only affect joints. Many are systemic.

Memory hooks

  • Tendon: muscle to bone. Ligament: bone to bone.
  • Arthralgia is pain; arthritis is inflammation.
  • Costo = ribs; chondro = cartilage.

Mini quiz

  1. What does arthralgia mean?
    Show answer

    Joint pain.

  2. What is costochondritis?
    Show answer

Inflammation of the cartilage near the ribs and sternum.

  3. What do ligaments connect?
    Show answer

    Bone to bone.
